Health Services and Programs
Many Youth today continue to contract the deadly HIV/AIDS Virus which puts the country’s future at Risk. The major causes of the increased prevalence rate of the epidemic are controllable like lack of knowledge among the youth on how they can avoid contracting the disease. It is on this basis that HEVIA has opted for a strategy to reduce HIV incidence, sexually transmitted infections amongst the vulnerable youth through educating the masses on how they can avoid contracting the disease by organizing Seminars, Radio talk shows, conducting public sensitization using music dance and drama, Games and Sports, among others which we call a Prevention is better than cure strategy.
HEVIA has also introduced counseling services to the victims of the disease. This has been branded as not forgotten strategy. This involves counseling services and giving an understanding the implications of HIV infection and copying with the challenges associated with it. It involves giving hope to the infected persons that it is not the end of it all and they can still live a meaningful life and be happy.
HIV/AIDS is not the only problem here, despite economic progress, life remains tough for many children and Women in Uganda, many children from the rural poor under age 5 will die of mostly preventable causes, such as malaria and diarrhea. We also focus on child and maternal health, using basic medicines, supplies, and interventions to prevent and treat illnesses at the community level by focusing more on the poor people in the villages. We also support expectant mothers by providing antennal, maternity and postnatal care. In Uganda many woman are still using traditional birth attendants to support them during child birth which leaves the life of many at stake. Many opt for this because they are forced by the economic conditions of finding it hard to earn a dollar in a full month. In partnership with our donors we help expectant mothers with free services thus saving their life. It is because of this that we chose to provide free medical access to such people.
In addition, educating unhealthy children is the most challenging experience a teacher can have since it will increase the level of absenteeism in class and lowering the level of understanding what is taught in class.
HEVIA is also promoting behavior change approach to health promotion and disease prevention, whereby communities are empowered to identify their barriers and challenges to uptake healthy practices and develop their own sustainable solutions. All of these approaches work to improve the health status of families through discussion and counseling.
